Annual Board of Directors Meeting

To All Cortland Country Club Members.

A reminder that Tuesday September 17 at 7:00pm at the Club we will be holding our Annual Board Meeting. The agenda for the meeting is at the end of this message.

As with prior elections the candidates will all be given an opportunity to address the membership in attendance. After this concludes we will motion for a pause of the meeting to open the polls and allow voting. Our by-laws allow the following membership categories to vote.

Only members with voting rights are allowed to vote. The following classifications have voting rights and depending on the classification may have 2 votes:

• Family (2 votes).
• Corporate (all members holding a golfing membership within this classification).
• Any other golfing classifications excluding collegiate, millennial, scholastic and temporary (1 vote).
• Social and Honorary (1 vote). Business Social shall have no voting rights.

The Family is allowed two votes, but not by the same person in the category, for example a husband has a vote and his wife has a vote. The corporate is allowed a vote for each golf member in that classification and as with the family it is one vote per individual member in that classification. All other eligible classifications have one vote per holder. Millennial, Scholastic, Collegiate, Temporary, Business Social classifications have no voting privileges.

There are four vacancies. We have three 3-year full terms and one 1-year partial term to fill. Each voting member will be allowed to select as few as one candidate and as many as three. The top three candidates with the most votes will receive the 3-year terms. The candidate with the fourth highest tally will fill the 1-year remaining term.

Candidates for Cortland Country Club Board of Governors

Angela Wanish

I have been a member of the Cortland Country Club for over 20 years. During that time, I have served on various committees including the Social Committee, Centennial Committee, and Membership Committee. I have volunteered my time to support a variety of golfing events such as the Men’s Member-Guest, Collins’ Cup, Ladies Finger Lakes, and Ladies 9-hole Member-Guest. Likewise, I have volunteered my time to support our social events, helping with the planning, organization and decorating for themed or seasonal events. I currently serve on the LGA Board.

I recently retired from the Cortland City School District where I served as a school principal for 23 years. Prior to coming to Cortland, I was a principal at Dryden Central School and previously taught in the Ogdensburg City School District.

My interest in running for the Board stems from a desire to support and give back to an organization that has been an integral part of my personal, social and professional life for the past 20+ years. From our wedding to family funerals and every celebration in between, business meetings, golf outings and social events, the club has been there. I want to ensure that our club continues to be there and to thrive. In order to do so, we must take a close look at our needs and priorities as an organization and align our finances accordingly. Planning for the short-term, as well as for the long-term viability and future sustainability is imperative. We must continue to maintain the exceptional golf experience that attracts people to our club, while ensuring that the house side of our operations is fiscally sound and meets the expectations of a country club for our members and visitors. If I am a successful candidate to the board, I look to bring my experience in planning, budget management, staff supervision, collaboration and leadership to this vital work.

Chris Mott

My name is Chris Mott and I have been a member at the Cortland Country Club for 6 years.  I’m a Moravia High graduate; received my BA and MA both from Ithaca College in accounting.  I have lived in Cortland for 6 years now with my wife Becca.  I currently work at Sciarabba Walker & Co., LLP an accounting firm located in Ithaca, NY.  I started there as a staff accountant in 2011 and now reside as a manager and the head of our audit department with a specialty in not-for-profits.  I am currently serving on the Ithaca YMCA board as their Treasurer/Head of Finance Committee.  I love the overall feeling of camaraderie amongst the members at the club.  It’s so enjoyable every time I show up.  With my accounting background I would like to assist with the finances of the club and look for ways we can continue to be cost conscious, but also ways to grow the overall experiences of everyone involved at the club with the hope of attracting new members.

William (Bill) Higgins

As a member for many years, with previous Board experience, I would help CCC continue to move in a positive direction, keeping the course and our facilities in top condition for future generations to enjoy. I am retired from Industrial sales & sales management, with a BS in Engineering + I acquired & held a license for several years as a Financial Advisor.

My Board experience – (3) previous terms and was elected President for (4) years.

Committee experience – House Committee, Golf Committee (including Men’s Member Guest Chair for approx. 15 yrs.), Finance, Personnel, Membership, and an ad-hoc selection committee for our current Superintendent.  Greens & Grounds Chair for the last 5 years.  I also published the “Breeze” (our Club newsletter) for several years.

I assist efforts to repair or upgrade the Club’s golf course, buildings, & utilities infrastructure, plus bring new ideas for the pursuit of new members.

As a Board Member, I will be responsive to member comments &/or complaints – research the issue(s), make a recommendation, and participate as needed in any corrective action.  I will also give our staff support & the tools they need for better customer service.

Our Club has operated with the current Committee(s) structure since the late ‘70s.  We have seen staff size reduced over the years, so today, it is important that those involved on the Board and Committees work with and assist our staff whenever possible. Time & effort is critical to our operations & the success of our staff.

Volunteerism and donations continue to be a large part of the Club’s continued success.   Strong Board efforts can ensure the work and monies donated will provide the entire membership with enjoyable experiences.

I appreciate the opportunity to run for the Board.

Jerry Hartnett

I have been a member of the Cortland Country Club now for 5 years, I currently sit on the buildings and ground committee, and this is my 3rd year on it.

I’m married for 36 years and have 5 children, my oldest is a Physical ed teacher in N C, my second son is a police officer at Cornell university, my daughter is a marketing director for Morgan and Morgan Law firm, my son Patrick graduated from Theil college with a degree in exercise science and is currently finishing his degree to become a physical ed teacher from Cortland State and my last son just graduated in May from Lemoyne and is currently looking to be hired.

I’m the Broker/Owner of Hartnett Realty Solutions located in Cortland on Groton Ave. Before that I was an Assoc Broker for Hage RE for 37 years.

I have served on several boards in the past, YMCA, Cortland Youth Bureau, St Mary’s Advisory Board, Cortland County Board of Realtors and I’m currently the president of Cortland Housing Assistance Council board in Cortland.

I’m running for the board for a couple of reasons. I truly enjoy playing golf and socializing with the group of people I have met or have known. I’m also interested in seeing the club continue to be a flourishing Country Club and to put my experience into helping it maintain that status.

I hope you will consider my application, as I’m not afraid of putting in the time and effort to make CCC a great club.

Evan Ramiza

My name is Evan Ramiza, I have been a member at Cortland Country Club for 5 years and have probably run into most of you at one point or another in Men’s League, one of the Calcutta golf events, PGA Jr League events, or a mixed scramble. I work at Sciarabba Walker & Co., LLP an accounting firm in Ithaca for almost 13 years and am currently a Partner of the firm. Other boards I have been on include recently include: Previously: Habitat for Humanity of Tompkins and Cortland Counties for 6 years as Treasurer. Currently: United Way of Cortland County where I currently serve as President, the Cortland Chamber of Commerce where I currently serve as President and previously Treasurer, and also as the Chair of the Cortland School District Audit Committee.

The current Board has been doing a great job in keeping our club a premier place to play golf and socialize in Central New York given the challenges both recent (Covid, workforce, etc.) and very recent (Tree damage). The Board is in the challenging position of trying to make sensible financial decisions while trying to increase membership, keep fees reasonable, manage/refit/update our aging building, and keeping the facility in the best shape possible. I want to help the club continue being the gem that it is into the future and help mitigate the challenges we face by utilizing my accounting and financial knowledge to best assist the club. While just having accounting knowledge doesn’t mean that I have perfect solutions, it does mean that I can assist in evaluating and identifying options to try keep and improve our wonderful club.

Susan Suben Long

I would like to begin by thanking the Board, Ted Campbell, Jeff Betters, Kevin Morgan, and our members and volunteers for their time and commitment towards repairing and revitalizing our golf course and clubhouse after “the storm”.  You are an exceptional group of people and are greatly appreciated.

It has been my pleasure to serve on the country club’s board for the past 2 terms in the capacity of Secretary, Chair of the Social Committee, Interim Chair and participant in the Membership Committee and organizer of 3 and Done.

I am hoping that you will support me for a third term so that I can continue to focus and expand upon the social aspect of the club.  During my tenure we have offered more Happy Hours with guest musicians, themed dining, wine tastings, sip and shop, and family friendly events.  These events, as well as our non-competitive golf tournaments and holiday parties, have proven to be financially beneficial to the club by increasing revenue, appealing to a new generation of members and giving all members the opportunity to interact with one another.

I have a dedicated committee of volunteers (Cindy Cathcart, Rick Bergeron, Erika Withers, Jaye Hale, Denise Ferro, Margaret Lambrecht, Johanna Dunham and Ruth Case. We work well together, are creative and mindful of member suggestions. The Social Survey that we send out every year is carefully reviewed and taken into consideration when we plan our calendar. I would like to continue to work with them.

Ted Campbell and I have formed a productive working relationship. He has been instrumental in making sure our events run smoothly. I can always count on him and feel confident we can provide the membership with many more appealing events in the future.

This past year, I was instrumental in securing the services of an IT consultant to uniform internal communications and broaden our social media presence to increase membership and revenue.

Each year since its inception, 3 and Done has had approximately 20 women enjoying our course and clubhouse on Thursday evenings. Some are even subbing for the LGA!

Lastly, I helped organize and participated in the 110-year Celebration sub-committee and am currently on the Chamber After Hours sub-committee for our August 21st event.  The social committee is in the process of organizing a Wedding Showcase for 2025.

My education and work experience include a BA in Sociology, a Master’s in Education and Counseling, a Certified Senior Advisor designation, and a Certificate in Gerontology.  I have been the President of my insurance agency for 29 years that specializes in long-term care planning. The Elder Care Division provides care coordination services for families experiencing a long-term illness.  In addition, I worked for 10 years as the Administrative Assistant for Faculty Development at SUNY Cortland and was the Director of Programs and Services for the Alzheimer’s Association for one year.

I pride myself on being a productive, transparent member of the Board while considering all aspects of the club’s financial needs to maintain its well-being and providing our members with multiple opportunities to interact with one another.  I would greatly appreciate your vote to continue working for you.
